LoJack Aids Police in South Florida Construction Recovery

Westwood, MA, September 21, 2001 - When workers at a construction firm in West Palm Beach, FL arrived at their job site one early spring day, they discovered that a 1994 Melrose Bobcat Mini-Excavator and a 1998 Ford Utility Truck and trailer were missing. They had been stolen during the night.

The Bobcat and Ford Truck and trailer, leased from Asplundh Tree Expert Co., of Willow Grove, PA, one of the leading utility contractors in the world, with a large equipment rental fleet, had a combined value of $89,500. Both the utility truck and the Bobcat were equipped with LoJack tracking devices.

As soon as the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office was notified, the LoJack tracking units were activated. Officers responding to the call picked up the LoJack signals immediately and quickly determined that the Bobcat had headed due south in the direction of Miami and the Ford truck was emitting signals that led police southwest to the suburban Miami community of Opa-Locka.

Within an hour, Miami-Dade police had picked up the LoJack signal from the Bobcat Mini-Excavator. Tracking the radio frequency signal, they were led to a Miami warehouse where the stolen Bobcat had been hidden from view. Police recovered the Bobcat and quickly arrested the owner of the building. The utility truck proved to be more of a challenge. However, only seven and a half hours after it was reported stolen, Opa-Lacka police discovered the truck, in good condition, left abandoned by thieves.

"Just over a year ago, during the week between Christmas and New Year's, we lost $80,000 worth of trucks, trailers and a mini-excavator from a job site theft," said Harry Burchell, of Asplundh Construction Corporation, Florida. When thieves struck this time, "the difference was that we had LoJack," reported Mr. Burchell.

The West Palm Beach firm soon had their Bobcat and utility truck back on the job, and Asplundh's important property was recovered without damage.

"This meant that our $26,000 mini excavator, and $60,000 truck came back to us in a very brief time. We did lose a trailer (valued at $3,500, not equipped with LoJack), but in all, $86,000 in valuable equipment was recovered and put back to work. This motivated me to get the rest of my fleet equipped with LoJack. It's a small price to pay for insurance and peace of mind."

Commenting on Asplundh's construction recovery and the fine work of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and Miami-Dade Police, LoJack president Joseph F. Abely noted, "LoJack gives police a secret weapon against criminals and helps to get extremely valuable and expensive equipment back to work, where it belongs. As Mr. Burchell said, installing LoJack on construction equipment adds a silent veil of protection, making it one of the most cost-effective preventive measures that a firm such as Asplundh can take."
